  • What causes alopecia?

    Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when your bodies immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles , which is where hair growth begins. The damage to the follicle is usually not permanent. Experts do not know why the immune system attacks the follicles.

    Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a common type of alopecia where there is widespread thinning of the hair, rather than specific bald patches. Your hair may feel thinner, but you're unlikely to lose it all and your other body hair isn't usually affected.

Telogen effluvium can be caused by your body reacting to:

    • hormonal changes, such as those that take place when a woman is pregnant

    • intense emotional stress

    • intense physical stress, such as childbirth

    • a short-term illness, such as a severe infection or an operation

    • a long-term illness, such as cancer or liver disease

    • changes in your diet, such as crash dieting

    • some medications, such as anticoagulants (medicines that reduce the

ability of your blood to clot) or beta-blockers (used to treat a number of

conditions, such as high blood pressure)

  • Prevent Hair Loss

It's true that men are more likely to lose their hair than women, mostly due to
male pattern baldness (more on that later). But thinning hair and hair loss are also common in women, and no less demoralizing. Reasons can range from the simple and temporary—a vitamin deficiency—to the more complex, like an underlying health condition.

In many cases, there are ways to treat both male and female hair loss. It all depends on the cause. Here are some common and not-so-common reasons why you might be seeing less hair on your head:
    1. Physical Stress - Any kind of physical trauma—surgery, a car accident,
or a severe illness, even the flu—can cause temporary hair loss.
    2. Pregnancy - Pregnancy is one example of the type of physical stress that
    can cause hair loss.
    3. Too much vitamin A - Overdoing vitamin A-containing supplements or
    medications can trigger hair loss.
    4. Lack of protein - If you don't get enough protein in your diet, your body
may ration protein by shutting down hair growth.
    5. Male pattern baldness - This type of hair loss, caused by a combo of
    genes and male sex hormones.
    6. Heredity - Basically the female version of male pattern baldness.
    7. Female hormones - Just as pregnancy hormone changes can cause hair
    loss.
    8. Emotional Stress - Emotional stress is less likely to cause hair loss than
    physical stress.
    9. Anemia - one in 10 women aged 20 through 49 suffers from anemia due to
    an iron deficiency.
    10. Hypothyroidism - Under active Thyroid Gland.

    11. Vitamin B deficiency - low levels of vitamin B are another correctible
    cause of hair loss.
    12. Alopecia areata - (Autoimmune-related), is a type of hair loss that occurs
when your bodies immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles.
    13. Lupus - (Autoimmune-related), overzealous immune cells attack the hair.
Unfortunately, hair loss of this type is “scarring”.
    14. Dramatic weight loss - Sudden weight loss is a form of physical trauma
that can result in thinning hair.
    15. Chemotherapy - Some of the drugs used to beat back cancer
unfortunately can also cause your hair to fall out.
    16. Polycystic ovary syndrome Imbalance in male and female sex
    hormones.
    17. Antidepressants, blood thinners and methotrexate -medication may
also promote hair loss. More common among them are certain blood
thinners and the blood-pressure drugs known as beta-blockers. Other
drugs that might cause hair loss.
    18. Overstyling - Vigorous styling and hair treatments over the years can
cause your hair to fall out.
    19. Trichotillomania - “IMPULSE CONTROL DISORDER” causes people to
    compulsively pull their hair out.
    20. Aging - hair loss or thinning of the hair in women as they enter their 50s
    and 60s.
    21. Anabolic steroids - If you take anabolic steroids—the type abused by
some athletes to bulk up muscle—you could lose your hair.
